This has been something that I have seen a lot of as the years progress. This trope stems from a movie "Lone Wolf and Cub: Sword of Vengeance" which I can gather (as of the time writing this posting I have not seen said film so it is mainly assumptions) is a grizzled samurai who assists a young child.
Note if there is an official name for this trope, please let me know so I may call it by its proper trope title.
SPOILERS AHEAD for the Mandalorian and Last of Us
Why this is a topic for discussion is how since this movie there seems to be so many forms of media that have taken inspiration from this.
One series that blatantly says they got inspired by the film was the Tv show “The Mandalorian”. This series followed by the same concept of a grizzled bounty hunter who makes it his mission to get this child (or Grogu or “Baby Yoda” as he is known as on the internet) to his people. In the behind the scenes of the show, the directors even stated how they got inspired by the film.
Another example (with the same actor as the lone wolf individual in the tv adaptation as the previous example) would be in the show “The Last of Us”. This features a man by the name of Joel takes into his care a girl named Ellie who is immune to an infection that is plaguing the fictional earth. This lone wolf personality came from the loss of his own daughter Sara who was unfortunately killed. In the series, I am intrigued to see how that progresses.
Conclusion: I think this relationship is an interesting relationship as it is a relationship that is not needing to be blood related but simply a bond. Plus watching them grow off one another is incredibly sweet but can be sad. To clarify, the lone wolf can soften with the care of the cub but watching them fight for said cub is both sweet and rather terrifying. Meanwhile the cub is in protection of the lone wolf but at the risk of their own innocence.
If you have any suggestions for others that fit under this trope please let me know.
